In 1998 or 1999 at the request of Lloyd Otteman and/or Fines Martin I reserved a room at the Offshore Technology Conference to discuss the idea of a Shell Offshore Pioneers group. Rich Pattarozzi who was the the Deepwter VP/GM (?) addressed the group telling about the various deep water projects underway and the recent success ,e.g Mars, Ram Powell, Ursa, Nakika(?). I believe Lloyd , Fines and Fritz Culver discussed the concept of a Reunion for Shell Offshore folks -- retirees and ex- employers as well.
There were a couple of reunions before the Galveston one. The first one at the Tremot probably occurred in 2002. One was held out by the airport, the other hosted by Pattarozzi at the Money Hill Golf course before that.
Homer Hershey helped set up the Galveston event. He knew George Mitchel very well, of course, and Mr Mitchell owned the Tremont .
A conversation with Lloyd would fill in the details, and probably correct some of what I just typed.

I heard about the reunion plans in 2001 and decided to get the exploration people involved by having a gathering at my Pirates Beach house (on the beach). The attendance averaged 60 people over the years - the maximum was 95 attendees. Only 35% to 40% of the exploration people attended the full reunion - some stated they did not know the engineers. Our last Beach House exploration gathering was in 2014, after which we sold the house. Joe Gittelman organized bi-annual exploration socials at #13 Restaurant on the outskirts of Galveston in 2016 and 2018.
